UNAIR AGE collaborates with CityU to offer scholarships and programs to students

UNAIR NEWS – Airlangga Global Engagement (AGE), in collaboration with City University of Hong Kong, hosted an information session and a guest lecture at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR). The event took place on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 in Kahuripan Room 301, 3rd Floor, Management Building, Universitas Airlangga MERR-C Campus.

The session featured Professor Chee Yoon Yue, Dean of Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies and Chair Professor of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at City University of Hong Kong. Attendees included UNAIR students from various academic levels, ranging from undergraduates to postgraduates, who are interested in studying in Hong Kong and in the fields of technology and start-ups.

Prof. Yue’s lecture, themed “Fostering Innovation and Entrepreneurship through University-Industry Partnership,” offered valuable insights on the programs at City University of Hong Kong and underscored the importance of fostering innovation in start-ups, technology, and industry.

Prof. Yue introduced City University of Hong Kong as a leading institution in Asia, ranked 17th in the region by the 2024 Asia University Rankings and 62nd globally by the QS World University Rankings.

He encouraged UNAIR students to consider pursuing master’s or doctoral degrees at City University of Hong Kong, which boasts nine colleges and 28 departments offering a range of undergraduate, master’s, and research programs.

Prof. Yue highlighted that City University of Hong Kong accepts students through various scholarship programs, including the LPDP scholarship. He also noted that international students will complete their studies in English.

“I hope Airlangga students will join our master’s or PhD programs at City University of Hong Kong. Graduates with strong academic records can receive LPDP scholarships. Additionally, both master’s and PhD programs are conducted in English,” stated the dean at City University of Hong Kong.

Prof. Yue emphasized the importance of students interested in the start-up world to deepen their knowledge to compete in the global industry. He noted that students must be prepared to compete in global leadership and develop their innovations and talents through university education.

He explained that innovation in technology, which thrives in the industry, involves more than just creating a product. It requires understanding the market and users, as well as developing comprehensive and well-rounded ideas. This illustrates the critical role of strong research skills in developing highly competitive start-ups.

A good university is one that keeps pace with industry developments by nurturing excellent researchers. “Good researchers come from good teachers, and good teachers come from good researchers,” said Prof. Yue. He elaborated on the strong connection between the quality of educators and researchers. Competent researchers generate knowledge that benefits society, “When you create the knowledge, you create the knowledge for the world,” he concluded.
