UNAIR NEWS – Alumni of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) continue to create initiatives with national impact. Among them are Moch Firmansyah S.Stat and Hadi Prayogi S.Stat, graduates of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), who, along with ten peers, successfully launched a startup called Ruang Data Indonesia. Drawing from years of involvement in student organizations, competitions, and conferences, the two merged their experiences and vision to establish a data-focused learning platform for students, professionals, and industry partners.
Their university involvement proved to be a critical stepping stone. Firmansyah, who once served as president of the FST Student Executive Board, actively pursued competitions and organizational work, earning dozens of national and international awards. Prayogi built a similar profile through international conferences, publications, community service, and business and investment programs. These experiences shaped how both alumni think and operate in their professional careers.
Building practical learning ecosystem
Motivated by the lack of industry-ready data talent, Ruang Data Indonesia emerged as a response to rising market demand. Firmansyah noted that while interest in data-related roles is rapidly expanding, many students and fresh graduates lack the necessary competencies. “There’s a significant gap between what the industry requires and the talent currently available. That’s where we saw the opportunity to create a learning ecosystem centered on hands-on experience and real-world solutions,” he said.

They began with a series of free training programs, including the Data Enthusiast Camp held in collaboration with UNAIR’s DPKKA. Strong community interest validated the concept, leading Ruang Data to formally incorporate in 2024. Within two years, the startup has trained more than 5,000 participants, served 500 clients, and formed strategic partnerships with over five institutions.
Prayogi added that Ruang Data benefited from the abundance of startup mentorship programs often overlooked by others. “There were many mentoring and development opportunities, but not many people took advantage of them. We committed to joining as many programs as we could, and that’s what helped Ruang Data grow into what it is today,” he explained.
Start small, stay consistent
Firmansyah, now the company’s CEO, emphasized that Ruang Data’s strategic direction always aligns with its founding vision. “We aim to build an ecosystem where data enthusiasts can grow, collaborate, and develop together. Our long-term strategy focuses on strong curriculum design, project-based learning, and meaningful academic–industry collaborations,” the Statistics alumnus shared.
Prayogi noted that internally, responsibilities are divided according to functional strengths to maintain efficiency. Still, both leaders highlight the importance of communication and a unified mission in sustaining team cohesion. “Focus on solutions, not ego. A shared vision and transparent communication keep the team grounded,” Firmansyah added.
In closing, Firmansyah encouraged UNAIR students interested in data, startups, or digital innovation to begin with small steps and remain consistent. Prayogi echoed this, urging students to take full advantage of the opportunities around them. “Don’t limit yourself to academics. Participate in trainings, workshops, and certification programs, they’re crucial for building a career in data, business, or startups,” he concluded.
