UNAIR and Russian State University strengthen global partnership in maritime research and cultural-historical studies

UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) welcomed a delegation from Russia House and The Russian State University for the Humanities (RSUH) on Wednesday (Nov. 5, 2025). The meeting, held on the 4th floor of the Plenary Session Room at Balairua, MERR-C Campus, was warmly hosted by UNAIR Rector Prof. Dr. Muhammad Madyan, S.E., M.Si., M.Fin., who received RSUH Rector Andrei Loginov and his team. The discussion centered on potential collaboration in education, research, and student mobility, particularly in the areas of fisheries and the humanities.

Advancing Indonesia–Russia collaboration in educational innovation

In his opening remarks, UNAIR Rector Prof. Madyan expressed appreciation for the visit and stressed the importance of strengthening mutual understanding between Indonesia and Russia through academic and research initiatives. “Universitas Airlangga consistently ranks among the top three universities nationally across health sciences, social sciences, and engineering. We are committed to advancing innovative education and global partnerships that contribute to humanity,” Prof. Madyan said.

RSUH Rector Prof. Andrei Loginov highlighted the growing ties between Russia and Indonesia, pointing to strong potential for joint work in maritime studies and the humanities. He also shared RSUH’s long-standing reputation as a leading humanities university in Moscow with a broad range of academic programs. “We aim to deepen collaborative research and welcome UNAIR students who wish to study the Russian language at our campus,” Loginov remarked.

Collaborations in maritime studies, language, and culture

In a follow-up discussion, both institutions explored various strategic opportunities for partnership. Rector Loginov emphasized the substantial potential for Russia and Indonesia to expand collaboration in the humanities and maritime studies through joint research funding and bilateral academic conferences. “We are interested in developing maritime research programs, digital history initiatives, and exchange programs for Indonesian and Russian language instructors,” Loginov said.

Representing UNAIR, Prof. Dr. Miftahussurur, dr., M.Kes., SpPD-KGEH, Ph.D., expressed strong support for the proposals. He noted that interdisciplinary collaborations, particularly those combining social sciences and applied sciences, can significantly advance substantial contributions to knowledge development. “Multidisciplinary research collaboration is increasingly critical. We are ready to follow up on this partnership with concrete initiatives,” he stated.

RSUH also introduced a new English-taught master’s program, Law in Digital Times, and opened opportunities for cooperation in psychology, cultural studies, theology, and Islamic studies. In addition, Russia, through Russia House, offers 30 full scholarships annually for Indonesian students interested in pursuing higher education at universities across Russia.

Through this visit, UNAIR and RSUH reaffirmed their shared commitment to expanding international academic networks, strengthening cross-disciplinary collaboration, and contributing to global understanding through education and research grounded in humanistic values.
