UNAIR NEWS – The Disaster-Safe Education Unit (SPAB) program, initiated by the Faculty of Public Health (FKM) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) in collaboration with STIKES Mataram, was warmly received by local communities and leaders. Held at Nurul Hakim Islamic Boarding School in West and North Lombok from
Wednesday to Saturday,August 20 to 23, 2025, the program was
considered a meaningful contribution to improving community preparedness for disasters.
The head of Bayan Village stressed that the SPAB program should not end as a ceremonial activity. He hoped for continued efforts to ensure communities are well prepared to face future disaster risks. “We hope this initiative does not stop here. Many residents, especially the children in this boarding school, still need education on self-evacuation and safety,” said Bayan Village Head Satradi during the event on Saturday, August 23, 2025.
A similar view was shared by Ustaz Hambaludin, coordinator of Nurul Hakim 2 Islamic Boarding School. He said the program directly addressed students’ needs. “We sincerely appreciate Universitas Airlangga, STIKES Mataram, and Senaru Community Health Center for their collaboration and support. This program reflects a concrete form of community service, particularly in strengthening disaster mitigation through SPAB at our pesantren,” he said.

During the program, students were trained to identify safe assembly points and create evacuation route maps. According to Dr. Setya Haksama from FKM UNAIR, these activities are highly relevant given Lombok’s vulnerability to disasters. “SPAB must be implemented in practice. Simple exercises like these can be crucial when a real disaster occurs,” he explained.
A representative from Senaru Community Health Center, senior nurse Roni Parlan, S.Kep., Ns., who is also an alumnus of STIKES Mataram, joined the program. He noted that SPAB could serve as a starting point to strengthen healthcare services within Islamic boarding schools. “We are ready to support the continuation of this program, including strengthening pesantren health posts and providing routine health checks for students,” he said.
The SPAB program also received full support from STIKES Mataram leadership, represented by Prof. Dr. Chairun Nasirin, S.S., M.Pd., MARS. This cross-sector collaboration between UNAIR, STIKES Mataram, Nurul Hakim Islamic Boarding School, and UNAIR’s Research Group on Environment-Based Disease, Disaster, and Health Management reinforces the commitment of higher education institutions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
With strong support from various stakeholders, the SPAB initiative in Islamic boarding schools is a strategic step to build early disaster awareness, helping students develop into knowledgeable, resilient, and health-conscious individuals prepared to face future challenges.
