UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has joined the ranks of top institutions in the field of chemistry by earning international accreditation from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). The university’s undergraduate and graduate Chemistry programs underwent a rigorous evaluation process to receive this prestigious recognition from a globally respected professional body.
The Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at UNAIR has once again achieved a remarkable milestone. Its Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in Chemistry have successfully obtained international accreditation from RSC, an esteemed global accreditation body for chemistry programs. The RSC accreditation process assesses 16 key criteria, including practical and transferable skills, research quality, professional competencies, and curriculum comprehensiveness.
Meeting global education standards
Achieving RSC accreditation serves as evidence that UNAIR’s Department of Chemistry meets global academic standards, earning recognition from the international scientific community. This accomplishment affirms the academic excellence of UNAIR’s chemistry programs and expands opportunities for students in both academia and professional careers, including access to exclusive RSC webinars. Furthermore, students and faculty members will receive a complimentary one-year RSC membership, enabling them to broaden their professional networks, access research publications, and receive career development support.
The accreditation evaluation was conducted directly by an RSC assessment team, which included Mr. Shreyan Patel (RSC Professional Standards Specialist), Prof. June McCombie (University of Nottingham), and Prof. Zanariah Binti Abdullah (Universiti Malaya). The team visited UNAIR on February 10-11, 2025, to thoroughly review the chemistry programs and ensure compliance with international standards.
Commitment to excellence
Dr. Alice Barker, an accreditation development specialist at RSC, emphasized that accredited programs must meet exceptionally high standards across all areas. . “As well as core theoretical topics, the professional skills requirement includes transferable skills such as communication, problem-solving and teamwork, whilst the practical skills requirement must cover a range of different types of experiments across the breadth of the subject.”

Dr. Helen Pain, CEO of RSC, is very proud of her international accreditation programme. “Universitas Airlangga has passed a series of rigorous requirements to achieve accreditation of their chemistry courses, and I extend my warmest congratulations to everyone involved,” she stated.
Meanwhile, Prof. Mochammad Zakki Fahmi, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D., Chair of the Department of Chemistry, hopes that this international accreditation will enhance student mobility and attract high-quality international students to UNAIR’s chemistry program. This recognition further solidifies UNAIR’s reputation as a leading institution in higher education with a competitive global presence.
