UNAIR NEWSUniversitas Airlangga’s (UNAIR) English Language and Literature Program (BASASING) continues to stand out in equipping students for the challenges of the industrial era and globalization. With advanced facilities, an innovative curriculum, and numerous accolades, the program reaffirms its commitment to producing highly skilled and globally competitive graduates.

Dr Layli Hamida SS MHum, Head of English Department, emphasized the program’s recognition on both national and international stages. “We have undergone several international accreditation processes. Besides achieving international accreditation from FIBAA, we have also secured certifications from AUN and ASIC,” she stated.

Dr. Hamida explained that the program has tailored its curriculum to keep pace with contemporary advancements, particularly those associated with the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The curriculum integrates theoretical knowledge with practical skills courses to enhance student competencies.

“Our program is particularly strong in writing skills, especially creative writing. One of our signature courses is English Professional Writing, which focuses on digital content creation. This course is a rarity among English literature programs in Indonesia,” she noted.

The program offers three core academic concentrations: literature, linguistics, and cultural studies. Beyond these, the program includes specialized courses that allow students to align their education with their career aspirations. “This approach ensures we prepare students not just academically but also professionally, enabling them to excel in the job market,” she added.

In response to the demands of globalization, the program has integrated advanced technology into its learning processes. Dr. Hamida highlighted that the program provides students with access to cutting-edge technologies, such as virtual reality (VR), and offers courses like Virtual Learning and Language Assessment. These courses enable students to practice and teach foreign languages using online and computer-based platforms.

“We also send faculty members to participate in Teaching English Online certification training. This initiative aims to benefit both faculty and students, enabling them to acquire advanced skills in teaching English online,” she explained.

Graduates of English program enjoy diverse career opportunities, particularly in the digital sector. Popular career paths include content writing, copywriting, UX writing, and digital marketing. However, many graduates also pursue careers outside the digital domain.

Dr. Hamida noted that a significant number of alumni have built successful careers in English language education, from teaching positions to founding their own training institutions. “In addition to teaching, another exciting avenue is working in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Many English literature graduates have built careers as ministry staff, government bureaucrats, or even in state-owned enterprises,” she concluded.
