UNAIR NEWS – To support the government’s efforts to combat stunting, Universitas Airlangga’s Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK) has launched a community service program by introducing protein isolate-based fish products.

The event, held in Putat Jaya Barat RT 11 on Saturday, July 12, 2024, aimed to introduce nutritionally rich fish products to prevent stunting. Dr. Eng. Patmawati S Pi M Si, the head of the program, emphasized the importance of educating the community on the benefits of fish consumption and the diversification of fish products.

“Moreover, it serves as a campaign to promote fish consumption, thereby raising community awareness about the variety of fish-based products. These fish products can also serve as business ideas,” Patmawati explained.

Protein isolates in powdered form contain over 75 percent protein, making them ideal for various products. These products are rich in essential nutrients needed to prevent stunting, making them an effective solution to malnutrition, especially among children in Putat Jaya Barat RW 11.

The event included education on stunting, its prevention, and the diversification of fish products as sources of nutrition. Participants also sampled innovative products made from isolates derived from fish bones, shellfish shells, and fish meat, which had been previously researched by Fisheries Technology students.

The event also partnered with the Faculty of Nursing (FKp) to offer 100 health check-up packages for residents, including tests for blood pressure, blood sugar, uric acid, and cholesterol.

Patmawati hopes that the FPK community service program will contribute to sustainable development goals, such as reducing poverty, improving access to nutritious food, enhancing quality of life, and preserving marine ecosystems.

“Hopefully, the future community service initiatives from the Fisheries Technology program FPK UNAIR will continue to benefit those in need,” Patmawati stated.
