UNAIR NEWS – UNAIR provides scholarships to students from Palestine. The scholarships were presented at the 69th Anniversary Commemoration Assembly of Universitas Airlangga on Wednesday, Nov 15, 2023, at Garuda Mukti Hall, MERR-C Campus, UNAIR, Surabaya.
UNAIR Rector, Prof. Mohammad Nasih SE MT Ak , expressed his condolences regarding the events currently occurring in Palestine. Prof Nasih said that some Palestinian students were unable to contact their relatives there. As a result, continued Prof. Nasih, the living expenses that students were supposed to receive had to simply stop.
“There are students who have difficulty or even can’t even contact their families. Let alone, getting finance support and so on. So, the current condition will definitely disrupt the learning process of fellow students,” said Prof Nasih.
Adhering to the value of ‘Morality’, UNAIR wanted to make its best contribution. Prof. Nasih said that moral and material support could help Palestinian students to continue their studies in Indonesia.
“Our support is greatly needed to save, at least the studies of Palestinian students. We plan to provide scholarships until the completion of their studies,” said Prof Nasih.
Scholarship grantees
There are five Palestinian students receiving the scholarships. Each receives 5 million rupiah of living costs assistance as well as tuition fees according to each student’s study program.
One of the scholarship recipients is Amina Alzaanin, a PhD student in Economics, Universitas Airlangga. To UNAIR NEWS on Wednesday, Nov 15, 2023, Amina admitted that she did not know the current condition of her family in Palestine.
“There has been no communication, for the past 15 days there has been no news. My house had been bombed; it was destroyed. It is a big war,” said Amina.
Amina felt helped by the support and prayers given by the UNAIR academic community, especially the scholarship she received. Because of this, she was able to maintain her enthusiasm to continue her studies.
“Thank you very much because we all here know the current conditions in Gaza, we cannot contact our families. However, Universitas Airlangga makes us feel not alone here and continue to be enthusiastic about continuing our studies,” said Amina.
