UNAIR Indonesian Language and Literature student community service establishes reading space in Sidorejo Village, Blitar

UNAIR NEWS – The Student Association of Indonesian Language and Literature Department, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) held another community service event in Sidorejo Village, Ponggok District, Blitar Regency on Monday-Friday, December 26-30, 2022. Entitled ABIPRAYA VOL 2, this year’s community service program focuses on literacy issues in rural communities.

To UNAIR NEWS, Avin Yanuar Alif, the chief executive, said that the literacy culture of Sidorejo Village people, especially children and youth, is still low. So, they decided to set up a reading space to improve the literacy of the locals. In addition, the program is also a form of scientific implementation of study programs that focus on literacy.

“We want to invite locals there to love literacy culture by establishing a reading space. Moreover, we also educate them that the reading space we built together is not only established but can also benefit many people,” he explained.

Avin continued, apart from establishing a reading space, they also held an Interest and Talent Seminar program for the children. In the program, they teach children how to write short stories, read poetry, tell stories, and so on with fun methods such as games and props.

Furthermore, to support the program’s sustainability, they also held training on organization for the Koyah group, Sidorejo village youth group. It is held so they can understand the basics of the organization structurally so that they can run reading space and literacy programs well in the future.

“We held training on organizational structure, organizational systems, internal and external problem solving, and other matters for the Koyah community because their organization had just regenerated,” said Avin.

In the end, Avin hopes that the establishment of the reading space can create a literacy ecosystem for the people of Sidorejo Village so that it can improve people’s interest in reading. Moreover, he also hoped that the collaboration between Sidorejo Village and HMD Indonesian Language and Literature will be more well-established through this community service program. (*)
