UNAIR NEWS – In realizing Indonesia as a state of law, recognition, and protection should not only be based on legal texts. It also requires progressive, contextual, and coherent legal protection. Therefore, a law enforcer should be able to think critically, deliver verbal arguments, and maintain integrity.

The idea encourages Rindang Syafa’at, Tazkia Sahria Aulia Mahfud, Anik Setyawati, Karine Luisa Hartono, Septi Tri Cahyani, and Cahyaning Puspita Nusantara to participate in the 13th National Law Debate Competition (LDH), which held by Universitas Tanjungpura, through a Zoom platform on Saturday, March 11, 2023.

The competition was themed: Intellectual Reconstruction of Gen Z as the Pillar of National Quality in Facing the Society 5.0 Era through Law Debate Competition. The team from the Faculty of Law (FH) UNAIR, led by Rindang, successfully won First Place.

To UNAIR NEWS, Rindang expressed their happiness and pride for the achievement. He felt that the competition was unique. Usually, debate motions are announced at least one month before D-Day. However, this time, the motion was announced just a week before the competition.

“We work hard to finish the motion research, it often spent our break time,” he said.

Stay consistent

During the interval period until the release of the motion, they focused on the case-building of the legal issue to consistently train the team’s thinking skills in constructing arguments. They also conducted debate simulations according to the discussed legal issue to practice delivering arguments.

“When the motion was released, we continued with the timeline of the work. Until D-day, all the motions could be systematically and structurally researched,” Rindang said.

Although they managed to outperform 16 teams from various other universities, the final-year law student revealed that they faced many challenges during the competition. Substantially, everyone must have different perspectives. Therefore, finding the right argumentation formula requires more effort.

“Besides, the challenges of team leader were rather about scheduling. Our team members consist of students from different classes. Therefore, we had to adjust the practice schedule,” he added.

Rindang suggested that students should be able to optimize their uni days to find new experiences. “College days are short. Enjoy every experience. Youth happens once. Be happy,” he said.
