UNAIR NEWSUniversitas Airlangga (UNAIR) Library recently hosted a three-day workshop series titled Achieving Success in Publications: Smart Reference Selection, held from Monday to Wednesday (October 14-16, 2024) at the Parlinah Moedjono Room, Dharmawangsa-B Campus Library. The event also had an online component via Zoom to ensure broader participation.

Faculty members, researchers, and students from various levels—diploma, undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral—joined the workshop to gain comprehensive insights into effective strategies for scientific publications. UNAIR Library Head, Suhernik MSi, opened the event by stressing the importance of such workshops in supporting the academic community’s publishing efforts.

“We’ve invited several providers and database vendors so that our faculty and academic community can directly consult on publication strategies and fully utilize the databases we subscribe to,” she explained.

The workshop featured insightful sessions. Nelly Arifyani, Senior Licensing Manager for Indonesia at Springer Nature, was the first speaker. She covered strategies for publishing in Nature and other high-caliber journals, offering perspectives from a publisher’s viewpoint. Nelly underscored that a researcher’s journey doesn’t end at publication. “You’re not just a writer and researcher; you must also be an effective communicator,” she remarked.

Arifyani pointed out that being an effective communicator involves three critical components: a logically structured manuscript, a sound publication strategy, and successful journal submission. She also introduced Springer Nature as the largest and most influential journal publisher globally, leading the way with a wide range of open-access journals.

From the publisher’s perspective, Arifyani emphasized six key areas researchers should focus on: improving discoverability, contributing to the scientific record, enhancing research communication and presentation, maximizing dissemination and impact, advancing career milestones, and avoiding duplication of effort.  “But above all,” she said, “it’s about sharing knowledge that benefits others.”

Arifyani also highlighted the importance of aligning a publication strategy with the target audience. “Researchers need to go beyond writing manuscripts. Understanding the strategies required to meet publisher standards is equally important,” she added.

The second speaker, Dr. Ferry Efendi, Ph.D., offered tips on publishing in high-impact journals from an academic’s perspective. Dr. Efendi, a top 2% scientist globally and a lecturer at UNAIR’s Faculty of Nursing, emphasized that UNAIR has consistently worked to enhance the quality of its scientific publications. He pointed out that 14 UNAIR journals are now indexed in Scopus, a significant accomplishment.

“This is an impressive number compared to other universities, as we focus on quality. The visibility of UNAIR’s journals on a global scale is outstanding in terms of both outreach and impact,” he explained.

In conclusion, Dr. Ferry advised researchers to prioritize aspects such as novelty, originality, relevance, quality, significance, and uniqueness in their research. “Don’t give in to the temptation of quick results with shallow content. The real key to success is persistence in the process, which ultimately leads to globally recognized publications,” he emphasized.
