UNAIR NEWS – The medical students of Universitas Airlangga tirelessly continue to achieve remarkable accomplishments. They won the grand champion at the Indonesian International Medical Olympiad (IMO) held by Universitas Yarsi, defeating 68 teams from reputable universities.
The 2023 Indonesian International Medical Olympiad (IMO) is an annual competition organized by the Indonesian Medical Students Senate Association (ISMKI). There are six categories in the competition, including Cardiorespiratory, Genitourinary, Musculoskeletal, Digestive, Neuropsychiatry, dan Infectious Diseases.
UNAIR delegations successfully achieved in several categories. Ali Mustofa and Inggil Mukti Gunawan won a gold medal for Digestive; Achmad Rifai and Illoney Nadya Kamila bagged home gold medal for infectious disease; Aileen Aisyah Maulida and Jovanda Atha Alodoa Aji won bronze for musculoskeletal; Yongki Welliam and Ikhsan Rifai Darmawan became the semifinalists in cardiorespiratory; and Nabila Rahmaniah and Mohammad Nizar Maulana became the semifinalists for neuropsychiatry.
Conquering the challenges
The team leader Yongki Welliam said that winning the championship was not easy. His team must manage their time well to prepare for the competition and the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).
They had to study even harder and perform best in the competition. Thanks to the support of the faculty and FK UNAIR alumni, the challenges are all conquered.
He was grateful for the achievement and the faculty’s financial and moral support. Without them, his team would not have achieved the accomplishment.
“We doubted ourselves due to the competitors from renowned universities who win the competition yearly. However, as the leader, I believe this year was our turn to win,” he told UNAIR NEWS on November 7, 2023.
How to stay consistent
This is not Yongki Welliam’s first time leading a delegation team from UNAIR Faculty of Medicine. He carried the responsibility of leading their delegations to victory. There were several key factors for Yongki to maintain consistency.
These lay in the team’s solidity and effective communication. The solidity is in the form of a support system among the team members to foster a unified spirit and vision. Effective coordination and dividing team tasks are also important to maintain consistency.
“Medical students shouldn’t be afraid or hesitate to join any competition. It will bring more benefits for us in the future,” he said.
