UNAIR Psychology lecturer gives insight on how to recognize burnouts

UNAIR NEWS –Negative emotional reactions in work environments are known as burnouts. Moreover, it often targets many people, including young adults and adults. UNAIR Psychology lecturer Margaretha Spsi PGDip Psych G Cert Ed MSc explained how to recognize its symptoms and overcome them.

She presented the topic as a speaker at INSPIRAGE vol 2 held by Airlangga Global Engagement (AGE) on Friday, April 22, 2022 (22/4/2022) online. He revealed that at productive age, work tends to be the trigger. According to her, work can be very time-consuming and energy-draining. It is also related to duck syndrome.

“The sufferer often looks completely calm, when in reality they are frantically trying to fulfill the demands of their life,” she explains.

Some things shown often by duck syndrome sufferers are depression, anxiety or the early stages of many mental illnesses. The counselor for children and adolescents also mentioned several symptoms of burnout.

Fatigue

Margaretha presented data that 67 percent of all workers experienced fatigue during the pandemic.

Depersonalization

It is the behavior of showing an effort to protect oneself from the feeling of disappointment. Depersonalization also includes a tendency to withdraw and reduce work involvement.

“Sufferers assume that by behaving in this way, they will feel safe and avoid uncertainty,” she said.

Decreasing ability

“Cognitive symptoms include not being able to focus on what they are doing because they often forget,” she explained.

Margaretha also explained the right reaction to deal with burnouts.

Understanding the stress pattern

“Sometimes, when you experience something unpleasant, you have to accept it and understand it first, then identify, so you know the pattern to prevent it,” she explained.

“Close your eyes first, then take a breath and realize it,” she explained.

Margaretha also showed the results of audience’s menti survey. The form of supports to UNAIR students to increase their self-esteem and prevent burnouts from academic matters can be in forms of sports facilities, gathering places, and others provided by UNAIR.
