UNAIR Public Health students experience MBKM internship at French manufacturing company

UNAIR NEWS – Public Health students from Occupational Health and Safety study field of Banyuwangi School of Health Science and Natural Science (SIKIA) Universitas Airlangga conducted the Freedom of Learning Independent Campus (MBKM) internship program at a French manufacturing company, PT Albea Rigid Packaging Surabaya. It was held from November 1, 2022, to January 31, 2023.

Rina Pertiwi, Alvin Alvian Arfandi Wiyono, and Afan Alfayad joined the program to implement Occupational Health and Safety in the manufacturing sector.

To UNAIR NEWS, Rina explained that the MBKM internship program at the international company has its challenges. The company’s highly disciplined and target-oriented culture allows students to learn about the professional world earlier.

They did a lot of things during internship, such as fire extinguisher and hydrant inspection, first aid inspection, safety briefing, safety induction for the guest and new employees, work environment measurement, work permits monitoring, work at height permits monitoring, hot work permit monitoring, and near-miss inspection.

“This international company is engaged in the cosmetic packaging manufacturing sector. The productions are done carefully according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), starting from the material preparation control department, blow molding, injection molding, and assembly and decoration 1,” Rina added.

The fourth-semester student explained that the company management is committed to paying attention to their employees’ occupational safety and health. They accommodate the concern by providing a safe and comfortable working environment, installing exhaust fans and fire protection, providing employees personal protective equipment (PPE), and so on.

“We patrol around to see the occupational safety and health practice regularly. We put on personal protective equipment. Once we found a violation, we followed it up by educating the employees and giving them a warning,” said the East Lombok-origin student.

“My team and I would like to thank the Faculty of Public Health (FKM) UNAIR for scheming the MBKM partner companies. Hopefully, the partnership with PT Algea Rigid Packaging Surabaya continues, as the outputs are very useful to prepare students with high professional values,” she said.
