UNAIR Rector emphasizes service and morality as cornerstones for graduates

UNAIR NEWS – Graduation remains a defining moment at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), where the university confers degrees across doctoral, master’s, bachelor’s, and diploma programs. At Graduation 254 on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2025, the second session, UNAIR graduated 908 students. The event, held at the Airlangga Convention Center (ACC), MERR-C Campus, was presided over by UNAIR Rector Prof. Dr. Muhammad Madyan, S.E., M.Si., M.Fin.

In his address, Prof. Madyan reminded graduates that graduation is not the end of their education but the beginning of their responsibility to contribute to society. “This marks the starting point for UNAIR graduates to put into practice the knowledge and skills they have acquired,” he said.

He emphasized that UNAIR equips its students with more than academic training, fostering non-technical skills that meet the demands of today’s world. Central to that preparation, he added, is the university’s guiding philosophy: Excellence with Morality.

“Excellence without morality is hollow,” he said. “On the other hand, excellence grounded in noble values leads to lasting success.”

Prof. Madyan pointed to distinguished alumni as examples of that principle in action. Among them are Surabaya Mayor Dr. Eri Cahyadi, East Java Governor and IKA UNAIR Chair Dr. (H.C.U.A.) Khofifah Indar Parawansa, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructures Dr. Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, and Chief Justice of Indonesia’s Supreme Court Prof. (H.C.U.A.) Sunarto.

“Their accomplishments show that the knowledge, character, and dedication shaped at UNAIR are invaluable in making a difference,” he said.

He closed by urging graduates to bring value wherever their paths lead. “Use your knowledge to meet the challenges of the times. The best people are those who bring the greatest benefit to others,” said the professor from the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB).
