UNAIR Rector welcomes Coordinating Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra for Public Lecture on legal reform

UNAIR NEWS – To strengthen collaboration between the government and higher education institutions, the Faculty of Law (FH) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) hosted a visit from the Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Affairs (Menko Kumham Imipas), Prof. Dr. Yusril Ihza Mahendra, S.H., M.Sc. The visit featured a public lecture titled “Government Policy in Legal Reform” on Wednesday (Oct. 15, 2025).

The event, held at Building A, G. Pringgodigdo, Faculty of Law, Dharmawangsa-B Campus, aimed to strengthen the partnership between academia and the government in advancing Indonesia’s legal system. Attendees included UNAIR Rector Prof. Dr. Muhammad Madyan, SE, M.Si., M.Fin.; Dean of the Faculty of Law Prof. Dr. M. Hadi Shubhan, S.H., C.N., M.H.; and representatives from the East Java Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Madyan expressed his appreciation for Prof. Yusril’s willingness to engage with the UNAIR academic community. He highlighted that legal reform plays a pivotal role amid ongoing social and legal developments in the country. “Legal reform is essential to ensuring justice, legal certainty, and the nation’s progress. The Coordinating Minister’s role in overseeing this process is both strategic and vital,” said Prof. Madyan.

He added that the lecture was an important opportunity to enrich academic discussions and build a stronger bridge between government policy and university-based research. According to him, law students must understand the broader context of national policymaking to become future legal professionals who uphold integrity and justice. The lecture also served as a platform for students and legal practitioners to gain insight into the government’s direction in reforming Indonesia’s legal system.

Prof. Madyan concluded his address by thanking all those involved in organizing the event. “We deeply appreciate the Minister’s presence and his willingness to share his knowledge with the Airlangga community. Especially for our law students—the future legal professionals—who will stand at the forefront of justice with integrity, expertise, and a strong commitment to upholding the rule of law trusted by society,”
