UNAIR NEWSUNAIR student has made another achievement. Ameilia Kusumawardani, English Language and Literature student of UNAIR Faculty of Humanities (FIB), won two categories at the Fly Navy International Archery Open 2022. She was ranked third in the Mixed Team General Standard Bow Division and second in the second stage of the Individual Women’s General Standard Bow Division.

Fly Navy International Archery Open 2022 is an archery competition commemorating the 66th Anniversary of Indonesian Navy Aviation and a preparation for the 2022 Provincial Sports Week (Porprov) 2022. The competition was held from May to June in the Dakota Field of Lanudal Juanda, Sidoarjo, East Java.

Demanding effort

Before winning the competition, Amel went through an effortful preparation. She barely had a month to practice.

“In such a short time, I had to divide my attention to my academics. The practice schedules often overlap with my classes and the mid-term exams (UTS),” she said.

Therefore, Amel pushed herself to manage her time well so that her academic activities do not disrupt her practices and vice versa.

“When I have got free time and no class, I always go to the field [to practice]. When it is time for class, I will put the practice on hold for some time. I did my assignments at night and got some rest,” she said.

Besides, Amel started her practice schedule earlier than her friends with her coach’s approval.

“I increase the practice duration through physical exercise with my coach. I practice almost every day, taking Monday off,” she added.

Gaining supports

Amel gained a lot of support from her loved ones. “I have a supportive family and coach that motivates me. They understand my psychological and physical needs as an athlete. Plus my friends at UNAIR UKM Archery always support me,” she said.

Another thing that keeps her motivated is her spirit to win. Amel believed that if she was being lazy to practice, her opponents would secure a higher score than her.

“If I do not want to lose, I have to avoid laziness,” said the third-year student.
