UNAIR NEWS – The implementation of Indonesia’s Merdeka Curriculum has presented new challenges for educators, as it requires them to independently design teaching modules to meet learning objectives. Teachers at MI Nurul Ulum in Gumeng Village, Bungah Subdistrict, Gresik, are no exception, facing the demanding task of creating these modules on their own.

To address this challenge, students from Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) participating in the Learning with Community Program (BBK) 5 launched an initiative called AI: A Teacher’s Companion. The program, implemented in Gumeng Village, was conducted in collaboration with Kupuku Indonesia, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing education.

Albert Rafael, the program coordinator, outlined an innovative approach that integrates artificial intelligence (AI) into the classroom to streamline the administrative requirements of the Merdeka Curriculum. This curriculum obliges teachers to design comprehensive modules, including learning outcomes (CP), objectives (TP), and progression pathways (ATP).

“Our AI integration provides a novel solution for developing CPs, TPs, and ATPs. However, achieving accurate and tailored results depends on crafting precise AI prompts. The workshop aims to equip teachers with the skills to create detailed and effective prompts that align with their instructional needs,” Rafael explained.

During the initiative, teachers were introduced to various digital tools that utilize AI, including Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Canva. They were guided in creating prompts tailored to their teaching objectives and in designing teaching materials using Canva to produce visually engaging presentations.

“This program does more than introduce AI for sourcing teaching materials. It also addresses real-world classroom issues, such as managing disruptive student behavior and recommending instructional strategies that suit the unique needs of each class,” Rafael added.

Rafael reported that teachers showed great enthusiasm for the program. The introduction of AI as a tool to reduce administrative burdens was met with widespread approval by educators at MI Nurul Ulum, who actively engaged in the sessions and asked numerous questions about its application.

“Many teachers expressed how AI significantly eased their workload, particularly in creating teaching modules. They also shared their excitement about applying these AI-driven methods directly in their classrooms,” Rafael concluded.
