UNAIR NEWS – Two students from the Faculty of Humanities (FIB) Universitas Airlangga won first place in the Batik Indonesia scientific paper competition. The competition was held by the Indonesian Batik Foundation and the Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia.
The talented students are Yulia Rochmawati and Rafida Mumtaz. On October 8, 2023, Yulia shared her inspiring story to UNAIR NEWS.
Exploring the values of Batik
In the competition announced on October 3, 2023, Yulia and Rafida explored “The Values of Batik for Building National Identity and Solidarity”. They discussed implementing the value of each batik pattern as an educational tool and strengthening the profiles of Pancasila student.
“We chose this topic as the government is currently implementing the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project (P5). Therefore, we want to contribute through this competition by educating people about Indonesian batik,” she said.

Innovation
They contributed an innovation titled “Canting: A board game for internalizing batik values to strengthen the character of Pancasila student profiles”.
Canting (Character Building Based on Batik) is a board game that incorporates batik values integrated with P5. It is designed for elementary to high school students.
“There are six patterns of Indonesian batik that represent the excellent character values in the P5. It can be a source of education for the younger generation,” she said.
In the end, Yulia and Rafida hoped that their idea would come true. “We hope that the innovation can be realized. We see that traditional and physical games are becoming popular again. There is a great opportunity for us to implement this board game tangibly,” Yulia said.
