UNAIR NEWS – Students from the Islamic Economics program at Universitas Airlangga’s (UNAIR) Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) have achieved outstanding success at The 2nd International Islamic Finance Olympiad (IIFO) 2024. Held at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) on August 16-17, 2024, UNAIR’s delegation returned with three championship trophies and four silver and bronze medals from this esteemed international competition.
Student contributions
Febriana Putri Nur Aziizah, one of the participants from UNAIR, explained that their success largely came from the poster competition. “I was the lead strategist for our group, overseeing everything from ideation to the creation of the master plan. We assigned tasks based on each member’s strengths. My teammate, Dina, handled the detailed content that was included in the poster,” she shared.
Aziizah, along with her team members Majidina Rati Hariani, Rehan Akbar Mahendra, and Hasnah Salsabila, presented a concept focused on the three pillars of Islamic Sustainable Finance: microfinance, green sukuk, and sustainable investment. Despite encountering significant challenges, including sudden changes in the evaluation criteria, they managed to secure a Bronze Medal.
Additionally, another team from UNAIR earned multiple accolades, with Albar Muhammad Aziz and his team winning first place in the poster competition, and Aziz being named Best Presenter.
Competition challenges
The challenges faced in this competition were not limited to technical aspects and evaluation criteria but also included logistical issues. Aziizah described one particular hurdle when the organizers unexpectedly announced, just a day before their departure to Malaysia, that they would not be providing stands for the posters.
“We ended up having to purchase our own stand and carry it on the flight. It was quite inconvenient because the stand was made of metal and was heavy,” she revealed.
The award ceremony, which took place on August 17, coinciding with Indonesia’s Independence Day, was a particularly memorable moment for the participants. “I hope this achievement continues to motivate our peers to persevere and always deliver their best in every opportunity,” Aziizah concluded.
