Immunology Symposium Crowded, Dalethyn Paper Popular

UNAIR NEWS – Immunology program of Postgraduate School held a national event “Symposium Wound Infection, From Basic to Clinic”, on Wednesday, August 3. The participants of this event were more than the committee expected. It was initially limited to 200 participants but in the last minutes, they reached 250 people.

“We couldn’t reject them as many of them were coming from Madiun, Tulungagung, even Makassar. We couldn’t just reject them? And again, the room capacity could handle and conducive,” said the Head of the committee, dr. Agung Dwi Wahyu Widodo, MSi.

The event was a collaboration of Immunology program and  Infection Control Association East Java, supported by Dermozone. There were two sessions in the event with two speakers for each session to present their researches.

First session, themed ‘Wound and Infection Control’. The speakers were dr. Agung Dwi Wahyu Widodo and dr. Ariandi Setiawan, SpB.,Sp.BA and moderated by Prof. Dr. Burhan Hidayat. The second session, themed ‘Wound Infection’. The speakers were dr. Subagyo Adi, Sp.PD and dr. Lynda Hariani, SpBP and moderated by dr. Agung Dwi Wahyu Widodo.

In the occasion, one of the paper was about active compound dalethyn which is from olive oil. It was emphasized in dr. Agung’s paper, it can kill nosocomial germs. The germs often attack patients treated in hospital. It can cause death. All this time, to fight the germs, antibiotics were used.

From dr. Agung and team’s research, it is believed that the germs can be prevented even killed with natural material. Therefore, there is no resistance in the future. There will be further research to determine the right dosage for kids, and how to boost its effectivity. Some mass media either local or international attracted to cover the story specially for the research. (*)
