UNAIR NEWS – A new breakthrough was made by Universitas Airlangga students in 58th Community Service Program – Learning Together with the Community (KKN-BBM) in Sidojangkung Village, Menganti Sub-district, Gresik. One of the work programs carried out by the 10 membered team was to preserve culture and improve children’s creativity in the local village.
The KKN team invited the children of Sidojangkung Village to learn and play traditional games. In the program which took place on 5 – 7 July 2018, the chosen traditional games were ‘dragon snake’ and the Five Basic ABC.
Preserving traditional games was chosen as one of the work programs because it has become an attraction for tourists, especially from foreign countries. In this game, KKN team members guided the children how to play the game and played together.
KKN team members realized that it is important for young people to care about the culture and creativity of children. It is to realize an intelligent, civilized and cultured Indonesian society.

Beside the two traditional games, the KKN team also held a coloring competition to hone children’s creativity.
“This traditional game can train children’s social interactions, train children to learn to interact socially with their friends. This is certainly very good for children’s development, “explained Sugiyanto, Head of Sidojangkung Village.
“Traditional games can also teach children about collaboration with friends, train children to be creative, and train children’s emotions,” he added.
Almost all traditional games were played in groups, so they teach tolerance and empathy for others, and sportsmanship, especially for the children of Sidojangkung Village. (*)
