Sociology Department’s Commitment to Build Student Character

UNAIR NEWS – Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Airlangga, is clearly committed to build the character and integrity of its freshmen through Character Building activityThe event took place on February 2-3, 2018 at PSPA Bima Sakti Malang. It was themed Sociology for Character and Education Spirit (Socrates), all lecturers and students came together like a big family.

The event was started with a welcoming speech from Dr. Sutinah, Dra., MS., As Head of Sociology Department, FISIP UNAIR. In her speech, she stated that the activity is aimed to establish a harmonious communication between lecturers and students. In addition, she also advised the freshmen to participate actively in the series of events.

“This event is designed to make freshmen more critical, ethical, and aware to the emerging issues. In addition, we hope the communication between lecturers and students and communication between students can be harmonious, “said Sutinah.

In the first session, Daniel Teodore Sparinga, Drs., MA., PhD., present some materials on building students’ critical attitudes. He stated that the key to successfully study sociology is awareness to the surroundings. He also explained some of the challenges that sociology students must face.

“Students of sociology must have 4 capitals, awareness to the environment, theoretical thinking, ability to apply the methodology, and mastery on the term sociology. In addition, we must also be ready to face challenges such as: ideology, doctrine, religion or belief, myth, commonsense , to character of personality , “said Daniel.

The second presentation was on Gender Sensitivity and Awareness by Prof. Dr. Emy Susanti, MA. In her presentation, Prof. Emy explained the issues of gender sensitivity and the importance of applying gender equality in social life.

“In the process of learning in campus, gender bias is not allowed. All male and female students should be given the same opportunity to develop their potential. ” Prof. Emy said.

Prof. Hotman Siahaan also gave some speech on various phenomena, from to criticizing the decline of the students’ spirit to produce quality thesis to the rampant and poor social interaction .

“The phenomenon of Zaman Now unconsciously trapped people to gather without  meeting. Therefore, improving communication is the key, “said Prof. Hotman.

On the last day, freshmen were invited to “Ngopi (Ngobrol Pintar) Seduluran”, a gathering with alumni and students of class 2014. It was aimed to motivate them to keep making achievements and to establish good communication across generations.

Salsabila Damayanti, Sociology 2017, said that the Character Building event was fun and relaxing so the participants can gain some knowledge well.

“The show was very useful, in an open minded state, and made students more critical,” said Salsa.
