UNAIR NEWS – Two Universitas Airlangga Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK), Haniyah Salma Iswandi and Alifa Karina, fourth-year and third-year students, respectively, join an International Summer School for the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the Hiroshima University, Japan. The program, held from Monday, September 12, 2022, to Friday, September 16, 2022, allows the students to explore knowledge and the latest technology in the field of fisheries and marine.
The Aquaculture students participated in a series of activities at Hiroshima University. After being introduced to the environment, they participated in the fisheries and marine program works on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 13-14, 2022.
“For a couple of days, we get to examine the cells using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Starting from collecting samples from the surrounding waters, preparing samples, and identification process by ourselves,” said Alifa Karina to UNAIR NEWS on September 23, 2022.
The SEM and TEM exams impressed Alifa. The equipment is unavailable in FPK, SEM and TEM exams cannot be conducted.

Apart from the program works, Haniyah and Karina also visited well-known landmarks, such as Satake Corp., Peace Memorial Park, and Miyajima Island in Hiroshima. They learned about Noh, a traditional Japanese theater, and Yukata, a cotton kimono worn in summer.
“We gain a lot of new things from the summer school, like discipline, time management, teamwork, healthy social circle, and attitude,” said Haniyah.
“I gain new insights. Though the laboratory visit was just two days, the program’s schedule has been well-arranged. I gain new insights from them and new experiences for us to use the laboratory equipment,” said Karina.
The Summer School was held by the Hiroshima University, Graduate School of Integrated Life Sciences, which has been partnered up with UNAIR FPK since 2012. The Summer School was expected to introduce the post-graduate program of Hiroshima University.
“The faculty and I would love to go international. The post-graduate study options won’t be limited around here,” said Ayu Lana Nafisyah Ph.D., UNAIR FPK Aquaculture Department lecturer.
