UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga continues to gain achievements. It comes from academic and student activities. Recently, UNAIR’s students have won Grand Asian Chess Championship (GACC). The competition was held by University of Malaya, on 18-24 January 2017.
UNAIR’s students who won the competition, Tiara Nugraeni S (student of Faculty of Pharmacy/2014) and Moch. Alifudin Al Islami (student of Faculty of Economics and Business/2014), became Top Five Female Players and 15th Placed Individual Category.
Before the international competition, the students who join Chess Student Activity Units (UKM Catur) have done simulations by holding local competition among students. Besides, they also practiced in a training centre with the seniors from other universities.
“During the week of final exam, we heard about upcoming GACC. We were interested to be part of the competition. We immediately came to the Management Office (rektorat) to submit a proposal and fulfilled all requirements,” Tiara said.
With regular exercise and experience, Tiara and Alif were confident to face all their opponents coming from Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka, and another Asian countries. In early competition, Tiara has defeated by her rivals. But, in the end, Tiara successfully reversed the situation. She won six points, beat her opponent and got Top Five Female Players medal.
Her friend, Alif, also beat his rival Woman Fide Master from Sri Lanka and held his opponent Malaysia’s Woman Fide Master with a draw. From this competition, he succeeded in securing his position at 15th Place for Individual Category.
“We feel delighted as we can make contributions at international level. We tried best to make Indonesia and UNAIR proud. Do what you want to do and contribute through your hobby,” Tiara added.
