UNAIR NEWS – The poor literacy levels in Indonesia encouraged Community Services and Sustainable Environment Division of Imaging Radiology Technology Student Association of Applied Bachelor’s Degree (D4) of Universitas Airlangga Faculty of Vocational Studies (FV) held Radiologi Mengajar 2022 in Pepelegi 2 Elementary School Sidoarjo. The program facilitates children in elementary schools to build their soft skills, especially in strengthening the children’s interests to achieve the Point 4 of SDGs, Quality Education.

Teaching emceeing, public speaking, and storytelling

The Radiologi Mengajar was held on three separate days: August 27, September 10, and September 17, 2022. The Chief of Radiologi Mengajar, Brayen Najoan said that the event was conducted under the theme ‘Break the limits, shine your brightness, strengthening soft skills and confidence through multiliteracy’, which focused on three skills, emceeing (Master of Ceremony), public speaking, and storytelling.

“Students at Pepelegi 2 Elementary Schools Sidoarjo joined every agenda of Radiologi Mengajar enthusiastically. The program allows students to learn and practice emceeing, public speaking, and storytelling.”

Brayen claimed that the three soft skills are useful for long-term use, from school until university. Especially when those are practiced at such early ages, the students’ skills will grow even better.

“We practiced two types of emceeing, the semi-formal and the non-formal one. At the same time, public speaking skills can be trained through speech. We also taught various types of speech and the right techniques.”

The storytelling skill aims to preserve Indonesian culture and build students’ confidence. Storytelling is the right medium for students to explore the character’s expressions they play.

Three-day event

The event was started on August 27, 2022, where the material was given, and students were classified into three fields based on their interests, including emceeing, public speaking, and storytelling.

“In the second meeting on September 10, 2022, students are divided into three categories where they were given materials, tips, and practices in emceeing, public speaking, and storytelling,” he said.

In the last meeting which was conducted on September 17, 2022, the students will be evaluated to assess the effectiveness of the material sessions. “The purpose is to evaluate the students’ understanding in learning the materials given,” Brayen said.
