UNAIR NEWS – Rosita, a student from the Faculty of Nursing Universitas Airlangga, won second place in the Smart Nursing Competition Essay Competition, held by the Association of Indonesian Nursing Student Associations (ILMIKI) Region V on Sunday, March 2, 2023. Students from Region 5, including East Java, East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, and Bali participated in the competition.
The Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) syndrome is the feeling of worry and apprehension when someone feels left behind and misses out on information, trends, and specific activities. To UNAIR NEWS, Rosita explained that FOMO can have positive and negative impacts.
“I believe FOMO has both positive and negative impacts. It depends on how we manage the feeling toward positivity or negativity,” she said on Sunday, March 2, 2023
Addressing the issue, Rosita proposed an innovative idea of FOMOMAP, an application designed to overcome FOMO. It carries the concept of oneself being the realization of thought and feeling as an object.
“It involves thoughts about who am I, what am I, what I want to be, and what steps I need to take,” she said. “It’s like building character, we can’t involve the nurse and other people. The only person who truly knows us is ourselves. Therefore, the application is a system for character building.”
There is a reason behind her idea. Rosita believes that FOMO and viruses share the same concepts. Viruses can treat virus-caused diseases by building an antibody.
“Everything infected with virus and bacteria can be treated using another virus and bacteria with lower concentration. The same goes for FOMO. A person with FOMO can be treated by encouraging them to make a positive trend,” she said.
The innovation brought Rosita to win second place in the competition. She shared some tips for her friends to join the competition. First, to be sensitive in identifying the surrounding problems.
“Identify problems around us, formulate the best solution. Honestly, it’s not my first competition, but this is my first time participating in a competition where I combined theories to find solutions and used international literature. Sources are important. Avoid working last minute, do it when you can while you can,” she said.
