UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) continues to solidify its reputation as a breeding ground for Indonesia’s brightest talents. Its alumni, recognized for their excellence across diverse fields, include dr. Ahmad Ridhoi, M.Si., a Faculty of Medicine (FK) graduate now serving as part of the medical team for Persebaya, one of Indonesia’s most prominent football clubs.
Driven by his deep connection to his hometown and love for Persebaya, Ridho joined the Surabaya-based team in 2022.
Ridho expressed that his enthusiasm for sports, particularly football, significantly aided his adaptation to his role on the Persebaya medical team. “This is a relatively new experience for me. However, since I’ve always loved football, it didn’t take long for me to understand the dynamics of sports medicine,” he added.

Responsibilities and challenges
As a general practitioner on Persebaya’s medical team, Ridho works alongside specialists, physiotherapists, and sports scientists. While the role differs slightly from general practice, the foundational medical principles remain the same. “The core aspects are quite similar since most injury treatments follow the same principles,” he explained.
Ridho also shared the impactful experiences he’s had in this role, including the tragic Kanjuruhan Stadium disaster, which claimed 135 lives.
“That was an unforgettable and heartbreaking moment. Our team was in Malang for a match when the tragedy occurred. It’s something I hope the football community never experiences again,” he said.
Reflecting on his journey, Ridho expressed immense pride in contributing to Persebaya. “Walking onto the field and being introduced as the team doctor at the start of last season felt surreal. It was a dream come true to finally be part of the team in 2022,” he concluded.
