UNAIR NEWS – The government has proposed constructing massive seawalls as a measure to address the threat of rising sea levels along the northern coast of Java.
Ecological Impact The construction of seawalls has the potential to significantly alter the northern coast’s ecosystem and shoreline dynamics. Changes in ocean currents and wave patterns could result in increased sedimentation in some areas and erosion in others. To minimize adverse effects and mitigate tidal flooding risks, seawalls must be strategically placed at critical locations.
Impact on Fisheries Seawall construction may also pose challenges to the aquaculture industry. If the foundations are too deep, they could lead to seawater intrusion, increasing salinity levels in cultivation waters and potentially disrupting aquaculture operations.
Alternative Solution An alternative approach involves the use of wave-breaking armor structures. These structures are designed to dissipate wave energy before it reaches the shore, helping to reduce the risks of coastal erosion and rising sea levels.
