UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) continues to earn national acclaim for its academic achievements. On Saturday (July 19, 2025), a team from the Dental Radiology Specialist Program received prestigious awards at the 2025 IKARGI National Symposium. The team’s accomplishments included Best Original Research awarded to drg. Rini Widyaningrum, 1st Place in the Case Report category to drg. Eva Nurmayanti, and 2nd Place in the same category to drg. Nisrina Alya Sajida Gatia.
The annual symposium, a nationally recognized academic forum, brings together scholars, practitioners, and residents from various institutions to exchange insights and discuss the latest developments in dental radiology.
Exploring new technologies and ai integration
In an interview, drg. Nastiti highlighted that each presentation offered a unique perspective, while collectively focusing on diagnostic innovation, advanced imaging techniques, and the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in dental radiology.
“Some of the studies also focused on rare clinical cases with high educational value. My own original research explored the protective effects of amniotic stem cell metabolites against CBCT radiation exposure, specifically examining VEGF and HSP-10 expression. This topic is particularly unique as it bridges regenerative medicine with radioprotective strategies,” she explained.
Drg. Nastiti also shared insights into her colleagues’ research topics. Drg. Widyaningrum, for instance, developed an AI-based model for detecting and staging periodontitis using panoramic radiographs.
“Her study builds on prior research and employs the Mask R-CNN deep learning algorithm for segmenting teeth and bone loss areas on panoramic images, while DenseNet169 is used for staging periodontitis,” she added.
She further noted that drg. Nurmayanti presented a rare case of ameloblastoma in a pediatric patient, using ultrasonography (USG) as the primary imaging modality. “It was a fascinating approach—highlighting the diagnostic potential of ultrasound, often perceived as a basic tool. The article combined clinical observations with imaging findings, drawing on recent literature to offer a new perspective,” she said.
As the competition concluded, Drg. Nastiti emphasized that the experience inspired her and the team to remain active contributors to the development of dental radiology and to continue refining their research capabilities through national academic platforms.
