UNAIR NEWS – The second day of The 5th National Student Leaders on Sustainability Meeting 2025 continued on Wednesday (Oct 15, 2025), at the Tarumanegara Room, 10th floor of ASEEC Tower, Dharmawangsa-B Campus, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR). The collaborative program between UI GreenMetric and Universitas Airlangga was opened with a prayer, followed by the national anthem Indonesia Raya, the Airlangga Hymn, and a lively Remo Dance performance by UNAIR’s UKTK student group. The traditional East Javanese dance reflected the spirit of cultural pride and harmony with the event’s sustainability theme.

Recognition for UNAIR commitment to sustainability

The first speech was delivered by Dr. Vishnu Juwono, SE, MIA, PhD, Head of the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, who commended Universitas Airlangga for achieving world’s top 10 in the THE Impact Rankings 2025. He praised UNAIR for its strong commitment to advancing sustainability across academics, research, and infrastructure.

“Students play a vital role in shaping a green campus culture and fostering innovations that create meaningful social impact,” said Dr. Juwono. He highlighted UNAIR as a model of a modern university that effectively integrates technological progress with environmental and social responsibility. He also expressed hope that this meeting would serve as a national platform for synergy, strengthening students’ roles as drivers of green transformation in Indonesia.

Empowering young generation through collaboration

The second address came from Prof. Dr. Muhammad Miftahussurur, MKes, SpPD-KGEH, PhD, FINASIM, Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation, and Community Development Universitas Airlangga. He emphasized the need for cross-sector collaboration to build sustainable campuses as part of Indonesia’s vision for Golden Indonesia 2045.

“Today’s students are the changemakers of tomorrow. The sustainability movement must grow beyond campuses and reach the wider community,” said Prof. Miftahussurur. He added that sustainability should be a defining value for the younger generation as they confront climate change and socio-economic inequality. He further encouraged participants to strengthen social empathy and embrace environmental awareness as the foundation of sustainable leadership.

Environmental commitment declaration

Following the remarks, the event continued with the reading and signing of the Environmental Commitment Declaration by representatives from the participants, UI GreenMetric, and Universitas Airlangga. The signing symbolized a shared pledge to take collective action toward achieving low-carbon cities.

The session concluded with a group photo that captured the collaborative and enthusiastic spirit of the day. Participants then enjoyed a casual coffee break before moving on to the next agenda, seminar and thematic discussion sessions organized by the committee.
