UNAIR NEWS – Understanding data processing is crucial to avoid bias in delivering information in data journalism. In line with this, the Center for Public Communications and Information (PKIP) at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) held Airlangga Digital Coaching: Data Journalism on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.

The event featured Utami Diah Kusumawati, a lecturer and researcher specializing in Data-Based Storytelling at Universitas Multimedia Nusantara. She highlighted that Asia, particularly Indonesia, is still left behind in data journalism due to limited data availability and technology.

“It’s regrettable that Indonesia hasn’t embraced data journalism as extensively as the United States and Europe, where it is more advanced,” Utami stated.

Data significance

Data plays a critical role in generating information. Data-derived information can serve various purposes, including policy-making and disaster management in specific regions.

“This website is a prime example of the importance of data in providing information and serves as a critique to the government to reduce and manage significant risks during disasters,” she added.

Data processing methodology

Utami explained that data processing must be meticulous. Data must undergo a lengthy process to become valid information. Before processing, data must go through a cleaning process.

Data cleaning is crucial for reviewing and organizing the data to ensure accuracy. “After cleaning, the data is re-analyzed, sorted, and classified before being processed into valid information,” she elaborated.

Following the cleaning process, data must be visualized. Data visualization involves converting data into graphics, infographics, and maps, making the information more accessible to the audience. “Engaging and concise visuals in infographics facilitate easier understanding for readers,” she added.

Utami hopes that data journalism in Indonesia will progress and match the standards of other countries. Data journalism is vital as it helps deliver valid information to the public.
