UNAIR NEWS – Janis Rosalita Suprianto, an alumna of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has succeeded in presenting Indonesia with the 69th gold medal at the 2023 SEA Games. This achievement made the national team achieve 69 gold medals targeted by President Jokowi.

As SEA Games ended on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, Janis presented three of the total six gold won by the Indonesian swimming contingent. They were from the Fin Swimming 100 and 50 meter Surface, and most recently in the Women’s 200 m Surface category. Furthermore, the 2013 UNAIR alumna also won three silver medals in the Mixed Relay 4x50m Surface, Women’s 4x100m Surface Relay, Women’s 4x200m Surface Relay.

With this acquisition, Janis is in the position of contributing the most medals in swimming at the 2023 SEA Games. For this stunning achievement, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) even dubbed her The Golden Mermaid.

Finswimming is a swimming competition number consisting of two categories: bi-fins and monofin. “As the name suggests, bi-fins use two fins each on the left and right feet. If it’s monofin , it’s only one fin, like the fins of a mermaid,” she said, quoting the unair.ac.id/news page.

Governor appreciation

The Governor of East Java, Khofifah Indar Parawansa, also appreciated this achievement. Coinciding with the National Awakening Day ceremony, Khofifah presented Jer Basuki Mawa Beya Award as an appreciation to Janis and other athletes from East Java at the Grahadi State Building Monday, May 22, 2023.

At 2021 SEA Games in Vietnam, Janis also succeeded in presenting two gold and two silver medals for Indonesia. The alumna of the Faculty of Humanities (FIB) is known to have been swimming since she was young, winning gold and silver from various local championships, and National Sports Week (PON) every year.

SEA Games is a sports event on the scale of Southeast Asia with the participation of eleven countries in 37 sports. In an interview with Unairnews, Janis expressed her desire to continue making the red and white flag hoisted higher at the end of the finswimming competition, which signifies the achievement of a medal from Indonesia.
