UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) through Airlangga Global Engagement (AGE) welcomed representatives from The ASEAN European Academic University Network (ASEA-UNINET) on Thursday, May 2, 2024, in the Plenary Meeting Room of Balai Rua, Management Office 4th floor, MERR-C UNAIR Campus.
Attending the event was Prof. Iman Harymawan, PhD, the Director of AGE. In his speech, he extended his warm welcome to ASEA-UNINET representative, Prof. A Min Tjoa. “Welcome to UNAIR Prof. Tjoa, we are delighted by your presence. This is the second meeting between UNAIR and ASEA-UNINET. For the next 60 minutes, we will discuss several important topics,” said Prof. Iman.
History of ASEA-UNINET
Prof. Tjoa on his occasion elaborated on the history of the establishment of ASEA-UNINET. He explained that ASEA-UNINET is a network of universities in Europe and Southeast Asia. It aims to promote the internationalization of education and sustainable research.
“ASEA-UNINET was established in 1994 and was pioneered by universities from Austria, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. Initially, it became the Austrian-Southeast Asian University Network. It currently consists of more than 90 universities from 16 different countries,” explained Prof Tjoa.
Prof. Tjoa continued that ASEA-UNINET is planning to attract universities in Timor Leste so they can join as members of ASEA-UNINET in 2025.
Expand collaboration opportunities
Also attending the discussion was the Vice Dean III of the Faculty of Advanced Technology and Multidiscipline (FTMM) UNAIR, Prof. Dr. Retna Apsari, MSc. Prof. Retna conveyed that FTMM UNAIR is a new faculty within UNAIR. Therefore, FTMM is very open to collaborating and being involved in ASEA-UNINET programs.
“FTMM is a new faculty at UNAIR and was only established in 2019. I hope that through this discussion FTMM will have the opportunity to collaborate with ASEA-UNINET in the field of research and PhD level scholarships,” explained Prof Retna.
In response to Prof. Retna, Prof. Tjoa stated that ASEA-UNINET will continue to open up opportunities for cooperation in other programs, especially for member universities. Moreover, ASEA-UNINET itself has various programs such as scholarships for students and researchers, conferences, and courses held regularly.
