UNAIR NEWS – “Knowledge makes us smart, but empathy and noble heart are what make us valuable”. This deep message was delivered by Abigail Ulil Albab Affendi, a representative of graduates from the Faculty of Medicine (FK) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), during the 264th Graduation Ceremony at the Airlangga Convention Center on Saturday (October 10, 2026).

Through his speech, Affendi recalled the graduates’ long journey of struggle. Graduation is not a finish line, but rather the beginning of an endless learning journey.

According to him, mastering science and knowledge is not enough if it’s not balanced with social sensitivity. The learning process in university essentially shapes students into complete individuals capable of bringing real benefits to the society.

Quoting the phrase, “The wound is the place where the light enters you”, Affendi referred to life’s wounds as a space for personal maturation.

“The process of this journey is not just about satisfying knowledge and ego, but about becoming humans capable of humanizing other humans. Behind the life’s wounds, we learned that there is a gap exists for bright light to enter and heal our souls,” he said,

He also expressed his deep gratitude toward lecturers, education staff, and both parents who endlessly offered prayers at every step of the graduates’ struggle.

“Thank you to our fathers and mothers who are always present in every prayer. Today’s degree and achievement are a small present to capture the glory and honor of our parents,” he said with emotion.

The graduation moment marked the shift of students’ roles toward a new phase of struggle. This message was conveyed by Dr Andik Fadjar Tjahjono Dra MSi, a Deputy Chairperson of East Java Regional Board and Advisor of FISIP Commissariat. “All of you officially hold the status of alumni, so graduates must now be ready to shoulder moral responsibility to make real contributions to the society,” Dr Tjahjono emphasized.

Furthermore, he expressed his appreciation toward UNAIR’s achievement in successfully securing its position in national top three, 276th globally by QS WUR, and number one in Indonesia for SDGs achievement. However, beyond that, the alma mater’s reputation is not just about rankings, but rather brought to life through social contribution and dedication among the public.

“The presence of all of you among the society must continue to strengthen relations and provide the best contribution to build a noble civilization. Let us become members of UNAIR Alumni Association (IKA) who are civilized, knowledgeable, and never forget good character by upholding the motto Excellence with Morality,” conclude Dr Tjahjono.
