UNAIR NEWS – The government has made various efforts to reduce the incidence of dengue fever. One of them is by spreading Wolbachia mosquitoes. Wolbachia is a natural bacterium classified as Gram-negative. This bacterium is naturally found in insects such as butterflies, flies, and bees. The biological technology of Wolbachia is used as one of the methods to control dengue mosquito populations. Male mosquitoes carrying Wolbachia, when mating with ordinary females, will not produce viable eggs. Female mosquitoes carrying Wolbachia mating with regular male mosquitoes will produce eggs with the Wolbachia gene. It can reduce dengue fever cases by 77.1 percent and suppress the spread of the dengue virus carried by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.
