UNAIR NEWS – Fasting is a religious obligation for Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan. However, one common challenge that arises during fasting is bad breath. Prof. Dr. Theresia Indah Budhy, drg., M.Kes., Sp.PMMF, a Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), shares valuable tips to help maintain fresh breath throughout the fasting period.
Causes of bad breath during fasting
Several factors contribute to bad breath while fasting, including reduced saliva flow, leftover food particles in the mouth, and untreated dental cavities. To counter this, it is essential to brush your teeth thoroughly after pre-dawn meal. Additionally, consuming fiber-rich foods and avoiding foods high in sugar can help maintain oral freshness.
Foods to avoid
To ensure fresher breath, steer clear of foods that disrupt the oral microbiome and metabolic system. These include deep-fried foods, alcoholic beverages, and carbonated drinks. It is equally important to maintain a healthy metabolism while fasting to support overall well-being.
