UNAIR NEWS – The effort of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) in strengthening local farmers’ capacity was continued through the launch of Community Service (Pengmas) Assisted Village program in Klagensrampat Village, Maduran Subdistrict, Lamongan Regency. On Wednesday, September 30, 2026, three of UNAIR FKH experts arrived at the Klagensrampat Village Hall to share knowledge on livestock development, poultry diseases, and the use of natural ingredients for duck health.

Introducing duck development model for mentored village

Prof Dr Wiwik Misaco Yuniarti MKes Drh was the first speaker to present the UNAIR FKH duck development model for mentored village. She discussed several fundamental aspects that livestock farmers need to consider, ranging from barn maintenance and selecting feed appropriate for the ducks’ growth stages. According to her, the implementation of this farming model must be adapted to the environmental conditions and the availability of local resources in Klagensrampat Village.

One of the concepts introduced by Prof Yuniarti was the use of ranch barn. This model provided space for ducks to move around actively so it helped the ducks stay comfortable and less prone to depression. “Ducks can move around actively and aren’t stressed,” Prof Yuniarti explained. She also encouraged the farmers to utilize local resources such as freshwater algae, rice bran, and fish as ingredients that could potentially be incorporated to feed formulation.

Presenting knowledge on poultry diseases

The next material was presented by Prof Dr Suwarno drh MSi who discussed poultry diseases. This session provided important knowledge for the prospective beneficiaries as the ability to recognize health issues early on is crucial to the success of livestock management. The understanding of diseases also helped farmers to implement more precise and targeted management practices.

Through this material, Prof Suwarno emphasized to the farmers on the importance of paying attention to the health of their poultry at every stage of rearing. Knowledge on diseases is not related solely to treating livestock when they become ill, but also become a part of the effort in keeping productivity and sustainability of poultry farming at the village level.

Curcumin potential for duck health

On the other hand, Prof Dr Mochamad Lazuardi drh MSi presented on the use of curcumin for duck health. This material introduced the potential use of curcumin as part of efforts to promote livestock health. This discussion complemented previous materials by featuring a perspective on the use of ingredients that can support the maintenance of duck health.

The training series also became more practical through the Sexing DOD demonstration by Prof Dr Sunaryo Hadi Warsito drh MP. Furthermore, there was a hands-on session on mixing feed for DOD led by Prof Dr Mimi Lamid drh MP. The series of events provided opportunities for farmers to directly observe the techniques relevant to duck maintenance. Through the launch of the Mentored Village program, UNAIR FKH has established the first milestone of its collaboration with Lamongan Regency, following its previous community service program in Bojonegoro Regency.
