UNAIR NEWSPostgraduate School, Universitas Airlangga held a webinar, Live Talk Series, on Law and Development. It was held online via Zoom Meeting on Thursday, Jan 4, 2024. It discussed economics, good governance, and technology.

On that occasion, Jason Elian, S Kom M HP, software consultant of Deloitte and an alum of MHSP UNAIR Postgraduate School became one of the speakers. He revealed that technology can be useful as applied science in its relation to creation in a social environment.

“In contrast to ancient times, we needed approximately five people to plow the fields. However, with the development of time and technology, humans have finally created technology that prioritizes efficiency through the invention of tractors,” he said.

“Technology evolves rapidly nowadays, but it still raises the question of whether it is beneficial or detrimental to humans. Apart from this, I believe that law can help to accelerate technological growth,” he explained.

According to Jason, the emergence of technology makes life easier. The development of technology makes it easier for people to look for things such as references in books, journals, or theses. Libraries are no longer the only place that can provide this, but so is technology.

“I believe technology exists to simplify human life and work, not to replace work. For example, before technology existed, we had to look for references or books in the library. However, with technology we have introduced digital books that we know, such as e-books or PDF books,” he said.

“Humans can also use technological advancement for various things, for example with search engines to make it easier for us to find answers. Furthermore, this technology is also able to show the original source,” he said.

Utilization of AI Technology

Furthermore, he said that the presence of AI could help alleviate and minimize errors that humans make, for example, in the case of traffic jams. It can be resolved by providing a safe distance between vehicles so that the traffic congestion does not last long.

“Based on a survey I conducted on personal Instagram, 85% of people think AI really helps their work. The real evidence is seen in cases where traffic jams in big cities are caused by human greed. Vehicles cutting corners cause traffic jams because they stop suddenly,” he said.

“The solution from AI is adaptive cruise control, which can provide a safe distance. In simple terms, this technology can be useful for maintaining vehicle speed within a certain level in accordance with existing regulations. However, this feature also has the ability to maintain distance from other cars,” he concluded.
