UNAIR NEWS – Three UNAIR Faculty of Humanities students won a silver medal at the scientific writing competition (LKTI) FAPERTA FAIR 2022 on Saturday, July 16, 2022. The talented students are Yulia Rohmawati from History ‘2020, Rafida Mumtaz from Indonesian Language and Literature ‘2019, and Raselly Elfa Putri from English Language and Literature ‘2020.

FAPERTA FAIR held by Universitas Nahdlatul Wathan (UNW) Mataram and Sentosa Foundation. FAPERTA FAIR, held offline this year, explores the Idea and Innovations to Realize Better Indonesia. Raselly told UNAIR NEWS that the competition transition from online to offline was a real challenge for her team.

“In the online competition, we can read the script during the presentation. This time, we had to memorize it well, so the material is well-delivered. We had to practice more for the QnA session with the juries. Body language and eye contact from each presenter must be well-prepared,” she said.

The English Language and Literature student admitted that it was an exciting experience for her team as they met and interacted with new people.

The competition required them to visit a remote location out of town, allowing them to travel and explore new places.

Smartwatch to prevent sexual violence

Yulia, the team leader, said that her team came up with SAVWIOR (Save Our Woman), an A-GPS-based smartwatch to Prevent Sexual Violence against Indonesian Women in the Era of Society 5.0.

The smartwatch is supported with anti-sexual violence features, such as a real-time camera recorder, a laser beam to obscure the perpetrator’s vision when committing violence to the user/victims, and an emergency phone integrated with the authorities.

Another feature is the ‘help others’ feature that enables users to request help from each other and ‘location point’ to detect the location accurately.

“This smartwatch is a new opportunity to prevent sexual violence against women. It is practically flexible, it can also be disguised as a regular watch with a low risk of robbery,” said Yulia.

Tips for winning national scientific article writing competition (LKTIN)

Last, Rafida underlined the most important part of joining a scientific writing competition; teamwork.

“You should know well the members of your team. Even when the idea is yet to be fixed, make sure your team is easy to work with and solid to develop a simple idea into a magnificent one,” said Rafida.

“Writing a scientific article is pretty easy and learnable, but managing a team and executing the idea are not easy tasks,” she added.
