UNAIR NEWS – Transforming the natural disaster into opportunity, the Anthropology Department of Universitas Airlangga Faculty of Social and Political Sciences made use of the annual flood in Kebomlati village for economic potential. The effort aims to increase the income of the local community.
Area prone to annual flood
Prof Dr. Dra Rustinsyah MSi, the community service team leader, stated that Kebomlati village in Plumpang sub-district, Tuban, is surrounded by the Bengawan Solo river. As a result, the area is prone to annual floods.
Geographical condition supports the duck farming
The anthropology professor at UNAIR FISIP stated that duck farming is a way to increase the local community’s income, considering ducks survive, even in the middle of the flood.
“The geographic conditions in the area also provide the natural feed of ducks,” she said.
Collaboration with related parties
The community service, held on August 8, 2022, was attended by some speakers from UNAIR FISIP. They are Drs Djoko Adi Prasetyo MSi, Dr. Drs H Mohammad Adib MA, and Prof Dr. Dra Rustinsyah MSi with the help of four Anthropology students.
Dr. Maslichah Mafruchati DVM MKes, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine lecturer, also explained more about duck farming. Apart from the academicians, a successful duck farmer from Widang sub-district, Tuban, Amir Syahri was also invited to share his practical know-how on duck farming.
Long-term benefits
Prof Rustin hoped the event would provide more knowledge on duck farming and increase the economic growth of the local communities. “The duck farming, hopefully, will provide local food to support the nutritional needs of the surrounding community,” she said.
The community service is an effort to achieve the SDG point in eradicating poverty and hunger.
