UNAIR NEWS – Ramadan does not stop ten students from the Traditional Medicine Study Program (BATTRA) UNAIR from dedicating their knowledge to the community. Through the Problem Based Learning (PBL) activity, the group tried to solve a problem in the community by utilizing four competences in BATTRA, acupuncture, acupressure, herbal, and nutrition.
To UNAIR NEWS on Saturday, April 9, 2022, the activity leader, Bunga Azka Salsabila Afandi, revealed that this PBL activity is presented in the form of a seminar and cooking demo for nutritious food for Musculoskeletal Disorders at Ramadan concept.
“This Ramadan, we cannot perform therapy through acupuncture and massages, so we decided to give education about nutritional therapy that fits to handle musculoskeletal disorders, especially during Ramadan,” she said.
Under the guidance of two BATTRA lecturers, Myrna Adianti SSi MKes PhD and Edith Frederika Puruhito SKM MSc (MedSci), Bunga said that this activity is meant to educate the community and target residents of Segoro Tambak Village, Sidoarjo Regency who are in productive age and having a musculoskeletal disorder.
With a BATTRA lecturer as a speaker, Edith Frederika Puruhito SKM MSc (MedSci), the seminar reviewed Healthy Diet for Musculoskeletal Handling during Ramadan. On that occasion, she provided dietary suggestions for musculoskeletal patients. The healthy diet suggestions include:
- Breaking fast with sweet foods such as date fruit
- Consuming warm diet such as ginger, lemongrass, and turmeric
- Drink water during breaking fast, after breaking fast, before Taraweeh, after Taraweeh, before going to sleep, and after suhoor
- Green vegetables
- Animal protein options such as fish and plant-based proteins such as soybeans
Furthermore, Edith did not suggest drinking coffee or tea during suhoor because it could trigger fluid body excretion. “Drinking coffee or tea should be consumed after breaking fast or after Taraweeh, and it is not recommended to drink during suhoor,” she said.
After the seminar, Bunga added, the PBL activity proceeded with a cooking demo of making turmeric milk, date milk, and butterfly pea pudding. Seeing the high enthusiasm from the target villagers, Bunga hoped that this activity could benefit the community.
“Hopefully, in the future, people will implement self-care of this nutritional therapy well because we provided the community with pamphlet and E-book about 30 suhoor menu and sweet food eaten upon breaking the fast. Furthermore, hopefully, the community will have reduced pain, especially in the musculoskeletal disorder cases,” she concluded.
