UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has once again demonstrateds the strategic contribution of its alumni in the higher education sector. Mujib Hannan, SKM, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kes., a graduate of the Faculty of Public Health (FKM) UNAIR, is currently serving his second term as Vice Rector I for Academic Affairs at Universitas Wiraraja.
His career journey began gradually, from a lecturer to becoming Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Universitas Wiraraja. He makes contribution and shows commitment to quality enhancement and sustainable institutional development.
Leadership pattern based on evidence-based decision making
Dr. Hannan stated that his academic experience and the culture of evidence-based decision making at UNAIR shaped his participatory, strategic, system-based, and quality-oriented leadership style.“As a result, policies are not reactive in nature. I believe that quality transformation cannot be achieved through partial policies, but rather through a consistent structural approach and the strengthening of internal capacity,” he explained.
As an alumnus, the personal contribution he is most proud of is maintaining academic networks while delivering tangible impact in the higher education sector. “One example is my involvement as an external examiner for Master’s and Doctoral programs at UNAIR. For me, this represents trust in my academic capacity and integrity, as well as a reciprocal contribution to my alma mater. However, the most substantial contribution lies in implementing academic governance based on the values and traditions of my alma mater. Serving as Vice Rector I for two terms is concrete proof that a UNAIR alumnus can take a strategic role in leading academic transformation,” he continued.
At a broader level, he is also active in professional organizations and higher education associations. He serves as Chair of Ikatan Ahli Kesehatan Masyarakat Indonesia (IAKMI) Sumenep Regency, a member of IAKMI East Java, Deputy Secretary of Asosiasi Perguruan Tinggi Swasta Indonesia (APTISI) East Java, and a board member of Indonesian Association of Nursing Education Institutions (AIPNI) East Java.
Opportunities and contributions of UNAIR alumni in higher education
From his perspective as Vice Rector I, UNAIR alumni, particularly in the field of higher education, have significant opportunities to contribute through the consistent and impactful implementation of the tridharma of higher education. “When the tridharma is implemented in an integrated manner and oriented toward public benefit, alumni can provide broader and more sustainable contributions to the nation,” he emphasized.
Furthermore, his impact as a UNAIR alumnus is reflected in strengthening institutional internationalization. “Through the expansion of international collaborations in education, research and publication, as well as community service, we open space for academic exchange, research collaboration, and curriculum benchmarking with overseas partners. As a concrete impact, students gain local perspectives enriched with global insight based on evidence,” he explained.
Finally, Dr. HannanMujib interprets an impactful alumnus as one who is capable of creating systemic transformation through policies, institutional strengthening, and sustainable human resource development oriented toward quality and graduate competitiveness, —rather than merely personal achievement.
“This concept guides my steps in designing academic policies at the university to create a multiplier effect. Ultimately, UNAIR alumni have a moral responsibility to transfer an excellent academic culture wherever they are. That is where the true meaning of alumni impact is realized,” he concluded.
