UNAIR NEWS – State sovereignty is the highest power that lies within the state itself. It is limited by the state’s jurisdiction. A state is authorized to regulate everything within its jurisdiction as long as it does not conflict with the recognized principles in international law.

One of the Universitas Airlangga Faculty of Law (FH) professors, Prof Koesrianti SH LLM Ph.D., published her first book on Kedaulatan Negara Menurut Hukum Internasional (State Sovereignty According to International Law). The state sovereignty-themed book was written by Prof Koesrianti with seven other authors, Dina Sunyowati, Enny Narwati, Shofy Suma Nisrina, Lina Hastuti, Indah Camelia, Masitoh Indriani, and Eko Suryo Prasetyo.

In collaboration with the Indonesian Society of International Law Lectures Lecturer Association (ISILL), UNAIR FH held a ‘Book Review: State Sovereignty According to International Law’ written by Prof Koesrianti, Sunyowati, Narwati, et al. on Tuesday, August 9, 2022. The event was attended by Prof Dr. Syamsuddin Noor SH MH from the Faculty of Law of Universitas Hasanuddin and Arie Arfiansyah Ph.D. from the Faculty of Law of Universitas Indonesia.

Prof Syamsuddin commended that the book met the international law’s sovereignty standards.

“Despite the small size with only 144 pages, this book is insightful. It brings the readers to contemporary theories in international law, which is pretty complicated,” he stated.

Another reviewer, Arie, said the book contains contemporary issues and cases in the past decade. For academicians, it is highly required.

“I think the last three chapters are the most interesting part of the book. It offers the state sovereignty contexts in the contemporary world. The book gives homework for many with piles of ideas to be examined further,” said Arie.

Prof Koesrianti said that it took them a couple of years to finish the book due to the hectic schedules of the authors, who are also international law lecturers at the Faculty of Law. She added that each chapter was specifically written according to the authors’ expertise. Therefore, the book consists of several sub-themes, such as territorial waters, sovereignty in disasters, sovereignty in humanitarian law, data sovereignty, and many more.

“I write in general and the international law. However, the book does not discuss the air sovereignty topic due to the expert’s tight schedule,” Prof Koesrianti explained.

Kedaulatan Negara Menurut Hukum Internasional is available in the Law Book Store or can be purchased in Play Store with affordable price and comprehensive explanations on the forms of state sovereignty according to international law.
