UNAIR NEWS – Dr. Arif Nur Muhammad Ansori MSi, a researcher from the Postgraduate School of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), is participating in a research internship program in Japan. The internship is in the Division of Genomics and Transcriptomics, The Joint Research Center for Human Retrovirus Infection, Kumamoto University.
The internship program is from January 15, 2024, to February 15, 2024. Professor Yorifumi Satou supervised the research internship. The laboratory for the program also hosted researchers from various countries, including Bangladesh, Malaysia, Egypt, and Japan.

Studying human viruses in Japan
In this research internship program, Arif had the chance to study human viruses including HIV-1 (Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1), HTLV-1 (Human T-cell Leukemia Virus Type 1), SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), and BLV (Bovine Leukosis Virus). “I studied their virology, particularly their genomic and transcriptomic aspects,” he explained.
Arif has gained numerous benefits, including a deeper understanding of Japanese culture. “I got many benefits, such as improving skills in the laboratory, expanding international networks, and getting to know more about the Japanese language and culture,” he said.
When he returns to Indonesia, Arif will focus on studying viruses. Several new ideas would be brought to Indonesia for further research, expanding opportunities for international collaboration.
The internship opportunity is an interesting experience for Arif. “Interning in Japan provides a good opportunity to see how the local population works efficiently and with discipline. Such a culture is beneficial for shaping work routines upon returning to Indonesia,” he expressed.
Furthermore, Arif is determined that the knowledge he gained will contribute to the advancement of virology. “The latest knowledge and technology in developed countries can be adopted and applied in Indonesia, especially in the development of virology at UNAIR,” he concluded.
