UNAIR NEWS – The 2024 ASEAN University Games (AUG) is set to commence, with Indonesia as the host. This biennial sports competition will see participation from Southeast Asian nations under the ASEAN University Sports Council (AUSC), including Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Brunei, and Timor Leste.

Nine universities will host the event. These include Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Universitas Surabaya (Ubaya), Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), and Universitas Pembangunan Nasional (UPN) Surabaya. In Malang, the games will take place at Universitas Islam Malang (UNISMA), Universitas Negeri Malang (UM), Universitas Brawijaya (UB), and Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM).

UNAIR has made extensive preparations as a host. Prof. Dr. M. Hadi Subhan, Director of Student Affairs UNAIR, confirmed the university’s readiness to support 2024 AUG, scheduled for June 25 to July 6. “We have coordinated extensively with the national organizing committee to prepare the necessary facilities and infrastructure,” Prof. Subhan stated.

For the first time, UNAIR will host six countries competing in judo and 3×3 basketball. These events will be held at the Airlangga Convention Center (ACC) and MERR-C Campus Sports Hall (GOR). “This is an international event involving several Southeast Asian countries. These two sports will feature participants from six nations,” he added.

Hosting the AUG is a significant milestone for UNAIR. Prof. Subhan noted that preparations have been ongoing for almost a year, involving coordination with various institutions.

“UNAIR has been tasked by the ministry to host the judo and 3×3 basketball events at AUG. We have been preparing for nearly a year,” explained Prof. Subhan.

Prof. Subhan hopes that the AUG will proceed smoothly without any issues. He emphasized that UNAIR is representing not only the university but also Indonesia. “We are carrying the good name of Indonesia, not just UNAIR. Therefore, we are committed to ensuring the event runs smoothly. So far, preparations have been thorough, and there have been no significant obstacles,” he concluded.
