UNAIR NEWS – Entering the admission period for new students, Universitas Airlangga through its Public Relation and Information Center (PIH) and Students Admission Center (PPMB) held dissemination about SNMPTN and SBMPTN 2017 in Bangkalan Regency. The event was held on Wednesday (1/2), at SMKN 2 Bangkalan Regency, Madura.
The event was attended by the Principal of SMKN 2 Kamus S.Pd and Branch Head of Education Board Bangkalan Regency Mariono. This dissemination was also participated by principals and counselor teachers from Senior High Schools/Vocational High School of the same degree in Bangkalan Regency.
The speaker from PPMB UNAIR Taufik, S.T., M.Kom., explained that even though a school student has a sound academic and scholarly track record, it does not mean the student will smoothly pass the SNMPTN. Other key factors will also determine their success, for example alumni grade point average, school integrity index, and competition level of each program.
If a student fails to gain entrance from SNMPTN, teachers are expected to keep encouraging the student to study diligently. This is because after the SNMPTN process ends, students still have the chance to take SBMPTN. In SBMPTN, students will do writing test collectively. The SBMPTN test will be held on 16 May 2017.
Besides SBMPTN, there is also an Independent entrance. Even though rules and official schedule have not yet been released by UNAIR, the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education has confirmed that the maximum quota from Independent entrance is 30 percent.
“For Independent entrance, we also do selection because the applicants are numerous,” Taufik said.
Selecting Program
Taufik suggested teachers to help their students select programs by finding out details about the programs, the quota and number of applicants, as well as to guide them to compare their capability with the program of their interest.
“Teachers have better understanding about the capability of the young (school students, -red). If their capability is mediocre, choose programs with an equal passing grade,” Taufik said.
In the same event, the Secretary of Human Relations and Information Center Dr. Bimo Aksono, drh., M.Si., asked the teachers and students to consider majoring at UNAIR Beyond Domicile Programs (PDD) Banyuwangi. According to data released by PPMB UNAIR, the competition level of PDD Banyuwangi is not as tight as in Surabaya.
There are four programs at UNAIR PDD Banyuwangi, namely Public Health Bachelor Program, Accountancy Bachelor Program, Veterinary Medicine Bachelor Program, and Aquaculture Bachelor Program.
“Same facilities, same lecturers; the difference is the students study in Banyuwangi. The processions of new students’ inauguration and graduation are still held in Surabaya,” Bimo explained.
As a conclusion, Bimo offered some suggestions to the teachers and principals. First, schools are expected not to do ranking on their own. Second, in completing School and Student Data Base, teachers are expected to be cautious in composing curriculum description.
“If there are problems in completing School and Student Data Base (PDDS) use the Help menu; because according to the central committee, inquiries must be answered on the same day they are made,” he suggested. (*)
