UNAIR NEWS – Five step solution has been offered by Dr. M.G. Bagus Ani Putra, Psychologist, Social Psychologist of Universitas Airlangga Faculty of Psychology to avoid the recurrence of sexual harassment case like what happened in a private hospital in Surabaya.
The case has been a trending topic in the mass media and social media, a female patient was sexually harassed by a male nurse. The patient does not resist, because she was suspected to be unconscious due to the effects of anesthesia from a medical treatment. The victim’s husband, who is also a lawyer, reported the incident to law enforcement. The case is currently processed by the authority.
“The first solution, for medical treatment, patients and paramedics should be of the same sex. This is to avoid the occurrence of sexual harassment, “said Bagus Ani Putra to reporters through group of social media, on Friday, January 26.
The second solution, the treatment should be done by two nurses, at least, so it will also work as a precaution. The third solution, the abuse victim and people around should be brave to report if there is harassment. This is to avoid continuing sexual harassment. Fourth, professional organizations should be obliged to uphold professional ethics.
“Then, the legal step is the right action,” said Bagus Ani Putra, Head of Information and Public Relations Center (PIH) UNAIR period 2012-2016.
Described by Dr. M.G. Bagus Ani Putra, an expert on Sexual Psychology and Interpersonal Relationships, quoting Sigmund Freud, every human has three components in his soul that affect his behavior.
The first component is Id , it is encouragement, libido, and other desires. The second component is the ego which is a rational reality based on individual status. And the third is the super ego that is about the existing norm.
“In response to the nurse’s sexual harassment news to the patient, judging by psychological analysis, the perp tends to have a high Id that defeats both Ego and Super Ego . Libido was left unchecked and defeated the reality as a professional nurse and norms or ethics, “said Dr. Bagus.
Other harassment causes (antecedents) may also be due to the situation. For example, the weak condition of the victim induced the abusive action, and generally the patient “hands over” the body’s physical safety to the medical officer.
“This is what is sometimes used as a debilitating situation for patients as victims,” added the UNAIR Social Psychologist.
The third reason, sexual harassment behavior is supported if the victim and the social environment do not act to prevent it, such as reporting the incident and providing social punishment to the perpetrator. (*)
