UNAIR NEWS – Cookies like nastar, kastengel, and putri salju are classic Eid treats. However, consumers still need to be careful when choosing high-quality and safe products, especially regarding the use of food additives.

Check color and aroma before buying

The use of preservatives, sweeteners, and food colorings is permitted under regulations and safety standards established by Indonesia’s Food and Drug Authority (BPOM), provided that these additives are used appropriately and within the prescribed safety limits. However, consumers should still be selective when choosing food products, such as avoiding cakes or snacks with excessively bright or unnatural colors. It is also important to pay attention to a product’s aroma and taste, as rancid odors or flavors may indicate that the fats in the food have undergone oxidation.

Check packaging safety & product authorization

Always check the expiration date on a product’s label before making a purchase. Consumers should also inspect the packaging carefully, choosing products that are clean, well-maintained, and securely sealed while avoiding those with leaks, cracks, dents, or other signs of damage. In addition, selecting products that have received official distribution permits can provide added assurance of their safety and quality. For products made by micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), ensure that the packaging is properly sealed by the manufacturer to help preserve product integrity and freshness.
