UNAIR NEWS – As part of an initiative to strengthen early exposure to technology, students from the International 7 cohort of Universitas Airlangga’s Learning with Community (BBK) program organized a STEM training program at Sekolah Kebangsaan Tanjung Langsat in Johor, Malaysia. The program introduced fifth- and sixth-grade students to visual programming using the Scratch platform.

In a series of interactive sessions, students created animated letter designs that spelled out their names. The university volunteers also guided them through the basic logic needed to develop a simplified version of the popular game Flappy Bird. Through these hands-on exercises, students were able to learn fundamental algorithmic concepts in an engaging and accessible way.

Cikgu Ridwan, a History teacher at SK Tanjung Langsat, praised the program’s impact. He explained that although students had previously been introduced to Scratch through classroom demonstrations, the involvement of UNAIR students allowed them to apply their knowledge in a more practical setting. “This initiative is especially valuable in helping students become more comfortable with technology, particularly given our limited facilities,” he said.

The program supports the goals of Sustainable Development Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), particularly in promoting digital literacy and nurturing innovation among young learners. With this early foundation, students at SK Tanjung Langsat are expected to be better equipped to navigate and contribute to an increasingly technology-driven global community.
